FOREIGN MINISTRY COMMENTS ON ARMS SALES TO RWANDA

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)

Regarding reports in the media concerning the sale of defense equipment from Israel to Rwanda in 1994, it must be stated that the Government of Israel carefully abided by the embargo imposed by the United Nations Security Council on the sale of weapons to Rwanda, in accordance with Resolution 918, of 17.05.94.

Since that time, the Government of Israel has not permitted any weapon sales to either Rwanda or to irregular forces, even though the embargo was lifted on 16.08.96. This is consistent with its policy of not supplying weapons to unstable regions.
