ISRAEL’S REACTION TO EVENTS IN NORTHERN IRAQ

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)

Israel supports the steps taken by the United States in response to the Iraqi violations. Israel is aware of the dangers embodied in the policies and actions of Saddam Hussein, and of the importance of an unambiguous international reaction to Saddam Hussein aimed at causing him to cease his aggressive policies and threats. Israel is the sole nation in the region directly threatened by Iraq.

Foreign Minister Levy met on Tuesday, September 3, 1996, with US Ambassador Indyk and expressed to him Israel’s support, saying that Israel stands by the United States. The Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of communication and coordination between the two countries.
