Jerusalem, 16 December 1998

CABINET COMMUNIQUE

(Communicated by the Cabinet Secretariat)

At the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Wednesday), 16.12.98:

1. The Cabinet was briefed by the Prime Minister, the Defense Minister, the Foreign Minister, the IDF Chief-of-Staff and other security officials on the situation in the Palestinian Authority and on the implementation of the Wye River Memorandum.

2. The Prime Minister reported on the talks conducted during the visit of US President Bill Clinton.

The Prime Minister noted that Israel is satisfied with the PNC decision to revoke the Palestinian charter. After five years, the Palestinians have taken action to nullify the relevant articles of the Palestinian charter — and this was achieved only as a result of the insistence of the Government of Israel. The Prime Minister added that Israel takes a serious view of all other agreement violations by the Palestinians.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Israel wants to see the full implementation of the agreement. If the Palestinians do their part, we will move forward.

The Prime Minister further said that, for now, he cannot tell the Government that the Palestinians are complying with their obligations and that Israel will execute the withdrawal on 18 December.

The Prime Minister will decide on a date to continue the Cabinet discussion.
