Communique Commemorating 50 Years of Soviet Recognition of Israel

(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman on behalf of Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Benjamin Netanyahu)
May 18, 1998

Exactly 50 years ago, on May 18, 1948, following Israel’s Declaraton of Independence three days before, the Soviet Union informed Israel that it recognizes the reborn state.

This prompt action evidently encouraged other states to follow suit, thus contributing substantially to Israel’s acceptance into the family of nations.

Notwithstanding difficulties in subsequent decades, at this historic juncture both countries look forward to the continued growth of cooperation in many varied fields, to the mutual benefit of our peoples.
