Israel’s Response to Signing of Peace Agreement in Northern Ireland

(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
April 12, 1998

Israel welcomes the signing of the peace agreement in Northern Ireland, which has come about as a result of determined efforts by all sides, in particular by U.S. mediator Senator George Mitchell.

After many years of bloodshed and acts of terror, in which thousands of people, including many civilians, lost their lives, a breakthrough has at last been achieved, after hard negotiations.

Israel wishes to congratulate Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Irish Taesaoich Bertie Ahern and the leaders of the Catholic and Protestant parties, on this historic achievement.
