Speaker of the German Bundesrat Visits Israel

Today, March 23, Mr. Gerhard Schroeder, arrived in Israel for an official visit.

Mr. Schroeder is the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, the present Speaker of the German Bundesrat (the upper legislative house), and the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) candidate for Chancellor in the upcoming German elections, scheduled to take place in September 1998.

Schroeder, a jurist by profession, was born in 1944. He became his party’s candidate for Chancellor follwing his victory in the parliamentary elections in Lower Saxony two week ago. This is his first official visit to Israel. His last visit to Israel was to attend the signing of an agreement between Volkswagen and the Dead Sea Works, regarding the opening of a magnesium plant.

Schoeder will be the guest of the Speaker of the Knesset, Mr. Dan Tichon. During the course of his visit, he will meet with the President, Prime Minister, Defense Minister, Labour Chairman Ehud Barak, and MK Shimon Peres. He will visit Yad Vashem and lay a wreath at the grave of Yitzhak Rabin.
