50th Anniversary of the Geneva Convention

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
12 August 1999

Fifty years ago today the Geneva Conventions were signed in Geneva.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesman expressed special appreciation for the work of the International Red Cross as the guardian of these conventions. The organization draws humanitarian red lines even in time of war, under the motto "even war has limits". It operates on behalf of the wounded on the battlefields and prisoners of war wherever they may be.

Israel applies the precepts of the Geneva Convention in the territories de facto, and cooperates with the Red Cross despite occasional differences, and also relies on the assistance of the organization with regard to its prisoners of war and MIAs.

The International Red Cross will continue to find in Israel an open and appreciative partner.
