(Communicated by the Cabinet Secretariat)
The Ministerial Committee on National Security Affairs, today (Sunday), 20.6.99, approved the proposal of the Counter-Terrorism Task Force to divide responsibility — among various security and civilian agencies — for air, sea and land crossings.
The Committee decision, which follows a series of discussions, marks the culmination of 18 months of intensive staff work by security agencies and Government offices, all coordinated by the Counter-Terrorism Task Force. The decision aims to offer a comprehensive solution to the long-range security problem at the crossings.
The Prime Minister said that the decision anticipates future changes — including the expected wave of tourists for the Millennium, and the opening of new crossings as a result of progress in the peace process.
