FM Sharon Responds to Consular Meeting at Orient House

(Communicated by Foreign Minister’s Media Advisor)
19 March 1999

Foreign Minister Ariel Sharon, last night (Thursday), 18.3.99, offered comment on the meeting of foreign consular officials at the Orient House:

"The visit to the Orient House by foreign representatives who are based in the area, and whose task it is to interact with the Palestinian

population, is meaningless — and the practice has continued for 30 years. At present, there is no Palestinian foreign ministry in Jerusalem, and the Palestinians have no standing in the capital of Israel.

Thursday’s consular visit to the Orient House — in an event staged by the Palestinian Authority — was nothing but a Palestinian attempt at deception, with no diplomatic significance whatsoever. The Palestinians and the states of Europe are all well-aware of the Israeli government’s position, according to which united Jerusalem will eternally remain under exclusive Israeli sovereignty, with the Palestinians never to receive any standing in the city."
