Holocaust Task Force Meets in Israel

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
13 October 1999

The international task force on Holocaust education and commemoration will convene in Israel, at the Foreign Ministry and Yad Vashem alternately, today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday), 13-14.10.99. Current task force members are Sweden, the United States, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Israel.

The current Israeli meeting is being organized by the Foreign Ministry and is being led by Shmuel Ben-Shmuel, Director of the Diaspora Affairs division, with the participation of other officials, educators and academics.

The forum – which was created in the wake of an exchange of letters between Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson, who initiated the project, US President Bill Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair – represents the first effort to institutionalize inter-governmental cooperation with regard to this sensitive and important issue.
