IDF Spokesman Announcements on Situation in Lebanon
(Communicated by the Cabinet Secretariat)
Following are a series of announcements from the IDF Spokesman, issued over Thursday night (24.6.99) and Friday morning (25.6.99), concerning recent events in Lebanon:
24.6.99, 21:00 — Several minutes ago, IAF planes attacked a power station supplying electricity to Beirut; the station is located in Jamhour, south-east of Beirut. The attack comes in response to the savage Katyusha attack on Israel’s Galilee and along Israel’s northern border, this afternoon (Thursday), in which Israeli civilians were wounded. Until now, Israel has conducted itself with the utmost restraint in the face of continuous Hizballah provocations. After this afternoon’s serious incident, however, Israel could not restrain itself and accept these Hizballah attacks against civilians. These serious attacks against civilians are in blatant violation of the Grapes of Wrath understandings, which categorically prohibit fire against civilian villages. Hizballah’s behavior threatens the validity of the Grapes of Wrath agreements. The IDF will continue to take all necessary measures against Hizballah and those who stand behind them, in order to protect Israel’s northern border.
24.6.99, 21:42 — Several minutes ago, IAF combat helicopters attacked two terrorist targets south of the Litani River in southern Lebanon. This attack follows the earlier attack, about 30 minutes ago, on the power station supplying electricity to Beirut. These attacks come in response to the grave Katyusha firings on Israel’s Galilee, where a number of civilians were wounded. The IDF clearly stated that it can no longer restrain itself in the face of Hizballah attacks directed against civilians — which strike a serious blow to the Grapes of Wrath understandings and threaten their validity. The IDF will take all necessary action to protect Israel’s northern border, and will strike Hizballah and those sources of power supporting the organization.
24.6.99, 23:00 — Several minutes ago, IAF planes attacked a terrorist headquarters in Ba’albek, in the Lebanese Beka’a Valley. This is the third attack against a terrorist target in Lebanon tonight (Thursday). The strikes were carried out in the wake of recent terrorist attacks against civilians — culminating in the massive Katyusha attack against the Galilee this afternoon, when a number of civilians were wounded. Tonight’s attacks come in the context of IDF activity to safeguard Israel’s northern border and to strike at Hizballah and its supporters.
25.6.99, 00:30 — Several minutes ago, IAF planes attacked a number of bridges south of Beirut: A-Zaharia, Awali and the coastal road interchange about 20 kms south of Beirut. This is tonight’s fourth attack on targets in Lebanon, following recent Hizballah attacks against civilians — culminating in this afternoon’s massive Katyusha strike on the Galilee, where a number of civilians were wounded. Tonight’s IDF attacks come within the framework of activities designed to defend Israel’s northern border and to strike at Hizballah and its supporters.
25.6.99, 01:05 — Two civilians were killed, another civilian was very seriously wounded and two other civilians were slightly injured tonight, during Katyusha missile attacks on communities in northern Israel. About 90 minutes ago, a third Katyusha barrage was launched against Kiryat Shmona and western Galilee communities. The seriously wounded civilian was transferred by helicopter to Rambam Hospital in Haifa.
25.6.99, 01:35 — A fourth barrage of Katyushas was fired at Kiryat Shmona at approximately 00:45. No casualties were reported.
25.6.99, 02:35 — Several minutes ago, IAF planes attacked a power station in eastern Beirut, in tonight’s fifth attack against terrorist and infrastructure targets in Lebanon — coming in response to Hizballah’s murderous Katyusha attacks against communities in the Galilee, where two civilians were killed, another was severely wounded and several others were slightly injured. Damage was also caused to property.
25.6.99, 04:35 — Several minutes ago, IAF planes attacked a broadcast station south of Damour, in tonight’s sixth attack against terrorist and infrastructure targets in Lebanon. The IAF strikes come in response fatal Katyusha attacks against Galilee area communities, where two civilians were killed, another was very seriously wounded, several others were slightly wounded and damage was caused to property.
