Israel Expresses Concern at Fighting between Ethiopia and Eritrea

(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
8 February 1999

The Foreign Ministry Spokesman on Sunday, 7.2.99, issued the following statement: "Israel views with grave concern the fighting between Ethiopia and Eritrea – two countries with which Israel maintains friendly relations.

Ethiopia and Eritrea have achieved much economically and socially in recent years and in the struggle against famine. Both countries have a promising future. For this reason Israel regrets the current outbreak of violence, which threatens all these gains.

Israel calls on the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments to make every possible effort to bring about the immediate cessation of violence, and to enter into negotiations to find a peaceful solution to the conflict."
