Mandate of International Presence in Hebron Extended

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
2 August 1999

The mandate of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH) was extended for another three months, effective yesterday (Sunday) 1.8.99. The extension was agreed upon last week in an exchange of letters between Foreign Ministry Director-General Eytan Bentsur and Palestinian Authority official Saeb Erekat.

It should be noted that, of late, there have been an increasing number of incidents in which TIPH personnel have issued reports that were critical of Israel, presenting facts in a decidedly one-sided fashion.

During recent contacts with members of the Hebron force, and in discussions prior to the extension of its mandate, Israeli officials explicitly told the TIPH commander that Israel will not be willing to accept the sort of biased and one-sided reports that have been distributed by TIPH headquarters over recent months.
