National Security Adviser David Ivry has issued letters of appointment to senior officials who will serve as deputy national security advisers. These appointments have been approved by Prime Minister Netanyahu and the cabinet ministers have been notified. The appointments are being made further to the cabinet’s decision of 7.3.99, which authorized the establishment of the National Security Council, and as part of council’s organization activities. Following are the appointments:

Maj.-Gen. (res.) G. Shefer – deputy national security adviser for planning.
Ambassador Y. Biran – deputy national security adviser for foreign policy.
Dr. A. Levita – deputy national security adviser for security policy.
Mr. Shamai Rapaport – chief of staff for organization and administration.

The appointments will take effect on 21.4.99, Israel’s 51st Independence Day. Further appointments are expected in May.

According to the cabinet’s decision, the National Security Council’s role is to coordinate, integrate, study and oversee national security policy.

From an organizational standpoint, the National Security Council has been designated a unit of the Prime Minister’s Office.
