PM Barak Meets Members of Congress

(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Ehud Barak today (Thursday) 19.8.99, met a group of 12 Republican Members of Congress, who are visiting Israel as guests of AIPAC.

Prime Minister Barak told the group that he places great importance on the united and bipartisan support which the US Congress has shown for Israel and the peace process. He said that he unequivocally supports the move of all embassies, especially the US Embassy, to Jerusalem. He added that Jerusalem will remain united under Israeli sovereignty. This has been the determined position of every Israeli government, including the present one.

Prime Minister Barak added that the United States has a vital role in the peace process as the country that provides the "umbrella" and the strategic and economic "security net" for agreements. He expressed his concern over the flow of nuclear technology to Iran, noting the importance of maintaining Israel’s qualitative edge and military strength as the basis for stability in the Middle East and the honoring of long-term peace treaties.
