Acting Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami met this evening with his French counterpart, Hubert Vedrin, at the French Foreign Ministry in Paris.

Minister Ben-Ami said: "Europe participated in the drafting of the Sharm understandings, and thus their violation is a challenge to Europe’s readiness to restore the spirit of negotiations to the region."

Ben-Ami added: "Israel does not intend to take unilateral steps. We only expect that the Sharm understandings be immediately implemented. One-sided steps taken by the Palestinians will obligate Israel to take defensive measures."

During an earlier meeting, the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi informed Minister Ben-Ami that Europe will coordinate its positions with the United States.

Minister Ben-Ami met later on in the evening with Javier Solana, the EU’s High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy as well as with Josep Pique, the Spanish Foreign Minister.
