Elections in Romania

(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson)
December 12, 2000

Israel wishes to congratulate Ion Iliescu on his re-election as President of Romania. The Romanian voters rejected the extreme racist, xenophobic and anti semitic ideas promoted by the Head of the "Great Romania" party, and brought about the victory of democratic values.

Israel wishes Romania success in the accomplishment of its national goals, including membership of the Euro-Atlantic framework, and expresses its hope that the President and his government will succeed in revitalizing the Romanian economy, for the benefit and well being of the Romanian people.

President Iliescu is well known in Israel. In 1991, he made a state visit to Israel during his first term as President of Romania, and he visited Israel again this year, as a guest of the Israeli Labour party.

Israel’s Embassy in Bucharest maintains very warm relations with the President and the leadership of his party.

We are certain that the good and unique relations between the two countries, which were enhanced considerably during President Iliescu’s first term of office, will continue to develop further in all areas, during his second term.
