November 16, 2000

Foreign Minister Ben-Ami met yesterday (November 15) with his Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov, prior to his departure for the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership Conference.

Minister Ben-Ami expressed his appreciation for the Russian efforts to end the violence, and noted the regular and ongoing contact between the two ministers.

Ben-Ami presented Ivanov with Israel’s positions on the major issues, and stressed Israel’s opposition to the deployment of an international force.

The Russian Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of carrying out agreements reached between Israel and the Palestinian Authority at Sharm el-Sheikh and at the Peres-Arafat meeting in Gaza. In addition, Ivanov stated that Russia believed that an international force would only be possible, if both sides agreed to it.
