Israel Aids Cyprus in Fighting Forest Fires

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
June 15, 2000

Hot, dry weather has caused large-scale forest fires in Cyprus. Cyprus President Glefcos Clerides appealed to the Israeli Ambassador in Nicosia, Shemi Tsur, and requested urgent assistance from Israel. Ambassador Tsur immediately contacted the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem. Foreign Minister Levy instructed the Ministry’s Situation Room to pass the request on to the Prime Minister’s Office and to the IDF, and within half an hour Israel responded positively to the request from Cyprus.

An Israel Air Force plane and two helicopters will depart within the next few hours to help the Cypriot authorities fight the fires.
