Council of Europe Secretary-General to Visit Israel

The Council of Europe Secretary-General, Walter Schwimmer, will arrive in Israel on Friday July 13 for an official five-day visit.

During his visit, the Secretary-General will meet with the President of Israel, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the Knesset Speaker. Mr. Schwimmer will also meet with Members of the Knesset (MKs) serving as observers on the Council of Europe, he will meet with the Mayor of Jerusalem and representatives of the families of the abduction victims in Lebanon.

Mr. Walter Schwimmer, who has been serving in his present position since 1999, served in the past as the Chairman of the Austria-Israel Friendship Association, and visited Israel on many occasions, within this framework.

Israel has had official observer status at the Council of Europe since 1957. MKs participate on a regular basis in the parliamentary assemblies and committee meetings of the organization.
