EU Presidency Visit to Israel – June 9-10, 2001

The Prime Minister of Sweden, Mr. Goran Persson, will arrive on Saturday evening (9 June)for a working visit in Israel. Sweden currently holds the rotating EU Presidency. Mr. Persson will be accompanied by the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Mr Javier Solana. The visit is part of a regional tour which will also include visits to the Palestinian Authority and Egypt.

During their stay in Israel, they will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, and with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affiars Shimon Peres.

The meeting planned between Prime Minister Sharon and Prime Minister Persson will be the first-ever meeting between the two leaders.

Their discussions will focus on the situation in the region, in preparation for the EU Summit which will take place in Gothenburg (Sweden) on 15-16 June 2001.
