FM Peres: After a year of Palestinian violence which has achieved nothing, the time has arrived for both sides to try and reach an agreement to end the violence

Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met on Sunday, November 25, 2001, with Romanian Minister of National Defense Ioan Mircea Pascu, and told him that Israel is awaiting the arrival of General Anthony Zinni and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs William Burns.

Foreign Minister Peres said that despite past disappointments this is a new beginning and a new effort, and one must not tire in the effort for peace. After a year of Palestinian violence which has achieved nothing, the time has arrived for both sides to try and reach an agreement to end the violence. The United States has an important role to play in this attempt, and we are making a supreme effort to make their visit a success.

The Foreign Minister added that Arafat must rehabilitate the PA’s credibility, and act against terrorism.
