Foreign Minister Shimon Peres told the President of Poland, Aleksander Kwaszniewski, that on his return to Israel, contacts will be made between the parties in preparation for his talks with Arafat.

Peres said that in his anticipated discussions with the PA Chairman, he will try to bring about a cease-fire, in the full sense of the word, and a return to the negotiating table.

Peres stated that the security discussions have lost their value, since they have degenerated into mutual recriminations, reflecting a political struggle.

According to Peres, the situation is particularly complex, and Israel is aware that a collapse of Arafat’s rule would lead to the rise of Hamas – an organization controlled by Iran, that calls for Israel’s destruction.
