Foreign Minister Shimon Peres issued the following statement following the murder of Tourism Minister Rechavam Ze’evy:

"I and my wife Sonia are deeply shocked by the despicable murder of our friend, Minister Rechavam Ze’evy. I worked closely with Gandhi during the decades of his military service and I witnessed his courage, his determination and his leadership abilities, side by side with true friendship and a readiness to render assistance in time of need.

Despite our ideological differences, Gandhi knew how to maintain personal friendship and to conduct a fair and substantive debate, while preserving mutual respect.

Our hearts are with Yael and the family, shedding their tears and suffering their pain."
