Meeting between FM Peres and EU High Representative Solana

FM Shimon Peres meets with the EU High Representative Javier Solana (June 22)

Foreign Minister Shimon Peres told the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, that Arafat’s orders for cessation of violence must be clear and unequivocal. FM Peres pointed out that significant preventative measures have yet to be taken by the Palestinian Authority regarding terrorists carrying bombs.

Peres warned of increasing Hizbullah involvement in the territories, which presents not only a threat to Israeli security but to the future of the Palestinian Authority.

According to FM Peres, the diplomatic activity of the European nations and America must be accompanied by significant economic activity which will enable an improvement in the living conditions in the territories. An international team is to be established as soon as possible for the formulation of an ‘economic Mitchell Report’, in whose implementation Israel is ready and willing to participate, said Peres.

On this subject, Peres emphasized his proposal that the Palestinian Authority establish a power station and a desalination plant, from which Israeli would buy power and water, and the implementation of the Gaza-Tulkarem railway project. These projects, according to Peres, would create thousands of jobs in the unemployment-stricken territories.
