PM Barak: We are monitoring events in Iraq; Syria, Hizballah and Lebanese govt. responsible for quiet

Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ehud Barak said today (Sunday), February 18, 22001, that Israel is closely monitoring developments in Iraq. In keeping with the foregoing, the Prime Minister will this evening hold a discussion with Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Shaul Mofaz and senior defense and intelligence officials.

Prime Minister Barak added that while Israel need not take any steps at the current stage, it cannot take developments lightly.

Regarding Lebanon, Prime Minister Barak said that Israel views Syria, Hizballah and the Lebanese government as responsible for maintaining quiet along the border and added that Israel would respond as it sees fit at the appropriate time.
