PM of Romania Visits Israel

(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson)
July 16, 2001

The Prime Minister of Romania, Dr. Adrian Nastase, is arriving today in Israel (July 16) for an official visit, as the guest of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

During the visit, Dr. Nastase will meet with the President of Israel, Moshe Katzav, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, and Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg. In addition, he will visit "Yad Vashem" and the grave of the late Yitzhak Rabin, as well as meeting with Israeli entrepreneurs and Romanian immigrants to Israel. The Romanian Prime Minister will sign two agreements: an anti-drug trafficking agreement and an agreement in the housing and construction sphere.

Prime Minister Nastase will be accompanied a number of ministers, entrepreneurs and journalists from Romania. This is the second visit of Dr. Adrian Nastase to Israel (the previous visit took place in March 1994, as the President of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies).

Israel and Romania enjoy very close ties and developing economic cooperation. Israel views Romania as an ally and a true friend, and the visit of the Romanian Prime Minister to Israel will enhance and promote the relations between the two states.

There are about 400,000 Israelis of Romanian origin living in Israel. They have become fully integrated into Israeli life, both from an economic and social perspective, constituting a bridge between the two countries.
