Jerusalem, 9 May 2001

(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met today with Norwegian Foreign Minister Thorbjorn Jagland. The Prime Minister provided details of the sharp escalation in Palestinian terror and violence and stressed the utmost commitment of the Government to achieve security for its citizens, saying it would do anything needed to protect them. Israel is committed to peace and stability, but not at the price of its citizens.

The Norwegian Foreign Minister expressed his condolences and shock at the heinous murder of two youths from the Gush Etzion area.

The Prime Minister said that his Government would conduct diplomatic negotiations only after an absolute cessation of all types of violence and terror. Prime Minister Sharon said that he demands that the Palestinian Authority immediately halt terror activities, as well as the venomous incitement to murder innocent Israelis and Jews, as conducted in the official Palestinian Authority’s media and under its exclusive control.

The Prime Minister told his guest of the Palestinian Authority’s continued arming of weaponry forbidden by agreements, which attests to its destructive intentions to step up the violence and terror.

The Prime Minister thanked the Norwegian Foreign Minister for his country’s long-standing and friendly relations with Israel, and for the invitation to visit Norway.
