Response to Statement by British Foreign Secretary

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson)
September 24, 2001

Israel Foreign Minister Director-General Avi Gil stated this evening (24.9) to British Ambassador to Israel Mr. Sherard Cowper-Cales, that Israel expresses is concern regarding the statements of British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, which may be understood as expressing sympathy for terrorism directed against Israeli citizens, and casting the blame for this terrorism upon Israel itself.

This attitude is liable to lead to an escalation of terrorism rather than its eradication, especially in light of the fact that the statement was made in Iran – a country which sponsors terrorism, whose official policy calls for the liquidation of the State of Israel, and which actively aids and assists terrorist factions.
