Members of the Sharm el-Sheikh Fact-Finding Committee, chaired by former US Senator George Mitchell, will arrive tomorrow in Israel (March 21) for a working visit, in the framework of a visit to the region.

The delegation, whose members include former Turkish President Suleyman Demirel, Norwegian Foreign Minister Thorbjoern Jagland, former US Senator Warren Rudman, and EU High Representative Javier Solana will meet with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Shimon Peres.

The delegation will also meet with Danny Naveh, the minister responsible for coordination with the fact-finding committee, with representatives of the Defense Ministry and the Israel Defense Force, with former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and with relatives of the victims of Palestinian terrorist attacks. The delegation will also visit Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority.

The visit is a continuation of the fact-finding efforts by the committee with regard to the events of recent months, in keeping with the mandate set out for it at the Sharm el-Sheih Summit of October 2000.

Prior to the arrival of the delegation, the Government of Israel presented the committee with a document countering the Palestinian claims presented to the committee, including the Israeli position regarding the need for Palestinian steps to halt the violence in the region, and referring to the Palestinian Authority’s direct responsiblity for the ongoing terrorism.
