Telephone Conversation between FM Peres and Indian Minister for External Affairs and Defense

(Communicated by the Foreign Minister’s Bureau)
August 13, 2001

The Minister for External Affairs and Defense of India, Mr. Jaswant Singh, called Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and strongly condemned the murder of innocent citizens. The Indian FM stated, in answer to Peres’ comments, that India will not accept any form of the Zionist=racism equation at the Durban Conference.

The Indian Foreign Minister, at the end of the conversation, raised the issue of Orient House and commented that he imagines that Israel’s decision was based on a good reason; however, he has received reports that this action is creating difficulties and awkwardness.

Minister Peres explained the background of the decision, described the attack in Jerusalem and emphasized that Israel’s choice of action did not result in the loss of a single life on the Palestinian side.

Minister Peres stated further that Israel’s goal is not just to defeat terrorism but to renew dialogue and find a solution. "We are aiming for a conciliation that will entail compromise," said Peres.
