Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni met on Thursday (15 November) with the Russian President’s envoys to the Middle East, Alexander Saltanov and Sergey Yakovlev.
FM Livni updated them on the situation of the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. In this context, she said, "The very fact of launching the negotiations at Annapolis – after seven years during which no negotiations were conducted between Israel and the Palestinians – is of great importance in itself. Stagnation does not serve either party. Fulfilling the security conditions serves our common interest."
FM Livni also called on Russia to exert its influence on the Arab world to support the Israel-Palestinian process: "It is important that the Arab states, including those which do not have diplomatic relations with Israel, should support and participate in the process. The more the Arab states will be partners to the process and take steps to advance normalization with Israel by stages, the stronger will the peace process be and the greater the progress achieved."
