Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni met on Thursday (1 November) with a delegation of the European Parliament visiting Israel. During their meeting, FM Livni stressed the need to broaden sanctions against Iran and the direct link between action against the Iranian nuclear program and the struggle against extremist elements in the Middle East. In this context, FM Livni presented her initiative to formulate and adopt a universal set of standards for participation in democratic elections which will prevent the participation of terror organizations, and stressed the need to involve the European Parliament in this effort.
This issue, first presented by FM Livni at the United Nations General Assembly, was also the focus of her meeting with Chile’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren. Livni asked him to place the issue on the agenda of the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Santiago (8-10 November). They also discussed ways to strengthen relations between the two countries on Middle Eastern, social and economic issues, and in voting in international organizations. Two agreements enhancing cooperation between the Israeli and Chilean foreign ministries were signed.
