Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni met in her office in Jerusalem this evening with Gen. Jim Jones, American Special Envoy for Middle East Security, and briefed him on the events of the past week in the Gaza Strip, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), and Jerusalem. Livni explained the implications of the security situation in Gaza for Israel’s security and for Israel’s future security requirements in relation to Judea and Samaria as well.

"The situation in Gaza and the terrorist attacks reinforce the lack of faith in the process. Israel must provide a solution to terrorism, and every process must unequivocally provide for Israel’s security needs. The establishment of a Palestinian state is not the answer to our security needs. The answer to our security needs depends on the existence of elements that not only want to live in peace with Israel but also are able to fight terrorism and to ensure Israel’s security. This must exist before and after the establishment of a Palestinian state."

Minister Livni will leave tonight for a working visit in the United States and will continue to discuss these and other topics at her meetings in Washington and Boston.
