As of today, August 9, 2008, the Ganot Crossing will be open for free passage of Palestinian vehicles between the hours of 6:00-18:00. The crossing, near the community of Shavey Shomeron, connects Nablus and its northern villages, such as Sabastiya, Burqa and Deir Sharaf.
The crossing was opened in order to ease transportation restrictions of the Palestinian population in the area in accordance with security assessments. This step is intended to implement a series of measures that will improve the quality of life for Palestinians in Judea and Samaria, as part of the plan authorized by Israel’s Defense Minister, Ehud Barak, and IDF Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi.
The opening of the crossing will significantly contribute to local economy, particularly to the residents of the northern villages, and assist to decrease unemployment rates. Now, the Palestinians from the northern villages will be able to reach Nablus and the southern villages in a shorter time; reaching these northern villages will also be made easier.
In accordance with the political echelon, the IDF will continue making every effort to maintain the daily life of the Palestinian population not involved in terror, while using all means at its disposal to act against terror infrastructures in order to protect the citizens of the State of Israel.
