Rafael Barak, MFA Deputy Director General, Western European Division, thanked the Slovenian ambassador to Israel for the severe denunciation by the Slovenian Presidency of the European Union of the statements by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other senior Iranian officials, who have once again called for the destruction of Israel. The European Union censured the statements this morning (Monday, 25 February 2008) in the most severe manner, calling them intolerable, insulting, and uncivilized. The EU also called on Iran to cease its threatening statements against a sovereign state  that is a member of the international community.

In his statement, Deputy D-G Barak spoke of the necessity of reaching a decision on the third round of sanctions in the Security Council against Iran, and called on the European Union to initiate additional economic and political sanctions against Iran outside of the Security Council.

Deputy D-G Barak added that "The severe statements made by the heads of the Iranian regime once again emphasize that Iran is a country that crudely violates basic human rights, verbally attacks a member of the United Nations, and supports terror organizations that are attempting to sabotage any chance at achieving peace in the region."
