In the next few months, the first ophthalmology residents from Gondar will be arriving in Israel to receive advanced training in the Ophthalmology Department at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center.

Dr. Morris E. Hartstein is an internationally known surgeon, instructor, and innovator in the field of ophthalmic, plastic and reconstructive surgery associated with the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, Tel Aviv University’s Sackler School of Medicine, and the Herzliya Medical Center.

Through the Himalayan Cataract Project, Dr. Hartstein has developed a relationship with ophthalmologists in Ethiopia, in Addis Ababa and in Gondar. Dr. Hartstein, his wife Elisa and children recently visited Gondar. While in Gondar, Dr. Hartstein met with Dr. Yared Assefa to discuss a planned exchange program between their two institutions. In the next few months, the first ophthalmology residents from Gondar will be arriving in Israel to receive advanced training in the Ophthalmology Department at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. Dr. Hartstein is looking forward to the planned exchange program as well as a visit by Dr. Yared to Assaf Harofeh.

While In Gondar, Dr. Yared and Dr. Hartstein examined the eyes of over 100 people in the Jewish compound. Treatment included giving out eye drops, handing out over 70 pairs of reading glasses, and referring other patients to the Gondar eye hospital for cataract, eyelid, and strabismus surgery.
