IDF SPOKESPERSON’S REPORT: A MONTH OF DISTURBANCES IN HEBRON

(Communicated by the IDF Spokesperson)

The violent disturbances which have taken place in the territories over the last month are continuing and intensifying. In Hebron in particular, in the last 30 days, there have been 24 days of rioting in the city. During the last month, Palestinians have thrown over 600 Molotov cocktails at IDF troops, in addition to several dozen acid bombs and 15 explosive devices. In comparison, during the whole month of May only one explosive device was thrown at IDF troops in all of the West Bank.

In a single day alone, as many as 117 Molotov cocktails, 10 acid bombs and one explosive device was thrown at IDF troops. Last Wednesday (9 July), there was also an incident of live shooting into the Jewish quarter.

Unfortunately, the IDF is confronting the rioting single-handedly. This is in contradiction with the Oslo Accords and Hebron Agreement which say that both Palestinians as well as Israel, "shall immediately respond to…violence or incitement and shall take all necessary measures to prevent such an occurrence." The Hebron Protocol stipulates the agreement that Palestinian police are to, "prevent entry of armed persons and demonstrators," into Israeli-controlled areas.

Furthermore, the rioting takes place in a particularly sensitive location, in close proximity to the Jewish neighborhood.

The IDF is doing everything to contain the violence with minimal use of force and to prevent further deterioration of the security situation in the territories.
