President Shimon Peres, in New York, awarded the Presidential Medal of Distinction to Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize laureate Elie Weisel for “his unique contribution to the memorial of the Holocaust and in light of his uncompromising drive for peace and tolerance.”

"We are honored to present you with the President’s Medal for your ongoing work in preserving the memory of the Holocaust.

The Holocaust taught us that indifference is as deadly as guns and weapons, and you Elie, are saving the world from its indifference. You are the flag bearer of preventing bloodshed; fighting racism, Antisemitism and preventing war. You have personally gone through the worst horrors of humanity, and as a survivor, you chose to dedicate your life to pass on the message: ‘never again’."
