The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee discussed on Sunday Brazil`s refusal to approve the appointment of former Yesha Council Chairman Dani Dayan as the Israeli ambassador to the South American country.
Committee Chairman MK Tzachi Hanegbi (Likud) called Brazil`s decision not to approve the appointment ”unprecedented” and said “This isn’t a personal insult towards Dayan or the Israeli government, it’s about the interests of the State of Israel. In light of the situation, it is clear that Dayan will not serve as the Israeli ambassador to Brazil. Therefore, it is the committee`s duty to find an alternative ambassador to Brazil and at the same time appoint Dayan to a different country that is not less important than Brazil.”
MK Nachman Shai (Zionist Camp) said that while he disagrees with Dayan`s politics, the Brazilian government’s decision is ”unacceptable.”
“Dani Dayan is the representative of the Israeli government and the State of Israel, and therefore, it is legitimate for him to be ambassador. That is Israel’s right. The government of Brazil’s stance should be condemned,” Shai said.
MK Anat Berko (Likud) charged that the Brazilian government`s decision ”strengthens the BDS elements that call for boycotts against Israel,” and added “If that’s the Brazilian government’s position, Israel should not send an ambassador there at all, in order not to give other countries the same opportunity.”
The Foreign Ministry’s representative in the meeting said that the Brazilian government did not send any official message rejecting Dayan, even though he was appointed five months ago. ”It is true that Brazil heard of the Israeli government`s decision in the media, before a `quiet` request was relayed, but in this era it is almost impossible to make an important decision without it leaking out,” he argued.
