(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)

The Foreign Ministry condemns the executions of playwright and president of the movement for the survival of the Ogoni people, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight of his colleagues.

The Foreign Ministry is saddened that the Nigerian Government did not answer the many pleas from around the world to spare the lives of the nine human rights activists. This terrible incident again underscores the urgent need to restore civilian rule to Nigeria as soon as possible. We call upon the Nigerian authorities to act in this direction without delay.
