| Israel-EU Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons
(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
Yesterday morning (Wednesday), September 24, 1997, Israel deposited with the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe its instrument of accession to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons (1983), following the Israeli government’s confirmation of Israel’s accession to the Convention.
Israel’s Ambassador to the Council of Europe, Mr. Gabai, and the General-Secretary of the Council of Europe, Mr. Tarshish, this morning signed the proces-verbal of deposit.
Attending the ceremony were the Knesset’s Representative to the Council of Europe, MK Ran Cohen, and the Director of the International Department of Justice Ministry, Ms. Irit Kahan.
The procedure means that three months from the date of deposit, actions may be taken in accordance with said convention and the Transfer of Prisoners to Their State of Nationality Law (5757-1996), recently legislated by the Knesset. It should be noted that three months after the accession, Israeli citizens serving sentences in member states to the Convention, may request to be transferred to Israel to serve their sentences here.
