| Foreign Ministry Regrets Postponement of Lileikis Trial
(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
The Foreign Ministry today, (Thursday) 24.9.98, expresses its regret that the war-crimes trial in Lithuania of Alexandras Lileikis has again been postponed. Lileikis, who served as the head of the security police in Vilna during the Second World War, sent tens of thousands of Jews to their death. The trial, which was originally to have opened in September after a delay of many years, was postponed due to the poor health of the defendant.
Israel views the holding of the trial as a symbolic and educationl step, and expresses hope that the Lithuanian judicial and constitional system will find an appropriate legal way to hold the trial.
