FM Levy Meets Churches Delegation

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
28 December 1999

Foreign Minister David Levy today (Tuesday) 28.12.99, met a delegation of representatives of Christian churches in Israel in order to promote an atmosphere of conciliation following the decision to build a mosque near the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth.

The delegation told the Foreign Minister of the concern of all the church leaders at the recent assaults and verbal and physical violence against Christians, and expressed their wish that the government reconsider its decision on the matter.

The Foreign Minister said that he would convey their concerns to Prime Minister Ehud Barak and expressed his wish to maintain an open channel – "a bridge of understanding" – between the Christian community and the government of Israel. All necessary steps will be taken in order to protect the security of Christian residents of Nazareth.
