PM Barak Meets with Norwegian and Dutch Foreign Ministers

(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Ehud Barak met today (Sunday) 22.8.99, with Norwegian Foreign Minister Knut Vollabaek and, in a separate meeting, with Dutch Foreign Minister Jovias Van Aartsen. The Prime Minister briefed his guests on the current situation in the negotiations with the Palestinians and on the Israeli stance on the need to extend the timetable of the Wye Agreement.

The Prime Minister said that the sides were currently standing before a window of opportunity, in which Europe has an important role to play in the multilateral track, and that he attaches great importance to European involvement in the peace process.

The disaster in Turkey also came up in the conversations, as did the need for a global effort to help Turkey’s recovery and supply humanitarian aid to that country. The Prime Minister said that Israel is trying to set an example in the swift dispatching of aid to the Turkish people.
