Acting FM Ben-Ami Sends Letter to Foreign Ministers

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
October 20, 2000

On October 20, Acting Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami sent a letter to foreign ministers around the world. In the letter, he stressed that Israel has been meticulous in carrying out all the commitments that it took upon itself at the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit, while the Palestinian Authority has failed to implement their commitments.

Foreign Minister Ben-Ami described the role of the Tanzim paramilitary organization in the events of recent weeks, and the ties of the organization to Fatah and the Palestinian Authority. He emphasized that the shootings at the Gilo neighborhood in Jerusalem and the serious incident at Mount Ebal took place after the conclusion of the Sharm el-Sheikh Summit.

In his letter, Ben-Ami quoted Fatah commander, Marwan Bargouti, who stated that Fatah is leading the intifada and that the violent actions would continue. Ben-Ami calls upon all his counterparts to use their influence on the Palestinian Authority, in order to end the violence and restore calm.
