IDF Soldiers Abducted on Northern Border

(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
October 7, 2000

Acting Foreign Ministry Shlomo Ben-Ami spoke today with US National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and with the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Richard Holbrooke, and demanded that the United States convey sharp messages to the governments of Lebanon and Syria on the need to maintain quiet along the northern border. Ben-Ami told his interlocutors that the Security Council’s debate of the events in the territories must be halted, when an entirely new situation has been created that renders the discussion divorced from reality.

Ben-Ami said: "Today, what is required are explicit, sharp messages to Arafat and to the Arab states on the need to restore calm to the area."
