Indian Minister of Home Affairs to Visit Israel

The Minister of Home Affairs of India, Lal Krishna Advani, will conduct an official visit to Israel (June 14-16) as the guest of the Minister of Regional Cooperation, Shimon Peres. Minster Advani is the most senior minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Vajpayee and is considered to be the second highest ranking member in the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) hierarchy.

Minister Advani will be the most senior official from India to visit Israel since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states in 1992.

Home Affairs Minister Advani, who visited Israel in 1995 as BJP president, is a friend of Israel who supported the establishment of diplomatic relations already in the 1970s and 1980s.

The visiting minister will meet with President Weizman, Prime Minister Barak, Minister of the Interior Sharansky and Minister of Regional Cooperation Peres. During the meetings in Israel, Minister Advani will be updated regarding developments in the peace process and an exchange of ideas regarding the situation in the Middle East and in the Indian subcontinent will take place. During his talks, other subjects will also be discussed, including the fight against terrorism and the protection of borders.
