Diaspora Affairs Minister Melchior Meets Argentine President De La Rua

Minister of Social and Diaspora Affairs Michael Melchior today (Thursday) 27.1.2000, met President of Argentina Fernando de la Rua in Stockholm where they are attending the Holocaust education, remembrance and research conference.
President de la Rua told Minister Melchior that there would be a thorough investigation of the murder of 2,000 Argentinean Jews under the military junta and the dirty war, adding that every effort would be made to bring the bodies for burial in Israel in the near future. The President also expressed a strong desire to cooperate with the Ministry of Social and Diaspora Affairs in the struggle against anti-Semitism and Holocaust remembrance.
Minister Melchior told the President that this was the first time that a senior Argentine official ahs spoken about these issues and that Israel would cooperate with Argentina.
President de la Rua delivered a message to Prime Minister Ehud Barak expressing his deep admiration for his governments courage in seeking to end the conflict in the Middle East and bring peace to the region.
As the conference draws to a close, the Minister has expressed great satisfaction that many countries have sought cooperation with Israel to develop joint programs in education and implementation of the lessons of the Holocaust and the struggle against anti-Semitism.
