President Katsav Statement on Today’s Events
(Communicated by the President’s Office)

President Moshe Katsav today (Thursday), 12.10.2000, expresses his profound shock over the abominable and brutal acts of murder of IDF soldiers which were perpetrated today in Ramallah, under the auspices of the Palestinian Authority.

In the recent events, the Palestinian Authority has fully shown itself as having inhuman values. These events cast doubt on the very fact of its membership in the community of enlightened and civilized nations and its ability to be a legitimate interlocutor.

President Katsav calls for the immediate formation of an emergency government which will – in a spirit of unity and a closing-of-the-ranks – deal with the challenges being put before the country.

President Katsav commends the ability of the IDF and the security services in carrying out the missions they have been charged with and supports the decisions of the government.

President Katsav notes that Israel has known even more difficult days and is confident that the same resourcefulness and unity which accompanied us in the past will also guide us at the present.
